TINA
Tina
The home of the insane Yellow turbo Cortina
Born in Dagenham Modified in Darlington.
This is where you can follow the progress of the Tina from its v6 to v8 transformation
keep checking for updates.
The car in her previous life she was a basic 1968 Mk 2 1600 2 door Cortina.
she was then extensively modified to accommodate a Sierra 4 wheel drive system the engine a V6 configuration which has had the following modifications carried out forged crank, polished rods, steel caps & bolts, high pressure oil pump, group A cam, stage 4 heads, copper head gasket, 6x Cosworth grey injectors, 2x T25 Garrett Turbo's, Nitrous Oxide Injection, Variable fuel injecion, adjustable boost, 2x intercoolers,
Power developed is aprox 675 BHP, this is transmitted through a AP paddle racing clutch to a 5 speed MT75 gear box then to two limited slip difs (front & rear) & onto the tarmac via 195 x 60 x 14 tyres.
Well where do I start, a long time ago a few racing fellows said to me instead of spending money on your v6 why don’t you go v8 and invest your knowledge (not much there) and skills (ha ha what skills) on that engine and you might have a reasonably fast car,
well 2 years later and here goes the story. We obtained the ford efi engine as a base line then set about removing the engine and
associated running gear from the tina and to assess the required space and where everything is going to Land then we completely removed the floor and bulkhead. Wonderful things plasma cutters
what did we do without them. The four link assembly was then constructed with help from John Sleath and place on the 8.5 inch axle which houses a Detroit 31 spine locker and shafts to match.
The axle and 4 link assembly was mocked up under the car and points were drawn on the floor with chalk to mark out the corresponding links to the body.
The axle was tacked together and the rest of the fabrication of the roll cage was started.
The construction is well under way with the chassis unfortunately my health was to take its toll after all the late nights toiling away until after 2 am for a few years, upon I ended in hospital 3 times for a heart issue, it was time to slow down a little as my thoughts were that my car will still be there for me to do but I wanted to be there to do it. I had to take a break from the Tina for a year to recover.
I wasn’t feeling too bad late 2006 so work started again on the Tina as starting to miss all the chat
and gossip associated with the NSCC and the rod runs and shows that are put on around the country.
December 2006 saw the engine assembled and sat into the chassis and the mounts were constructed for the
engine and gearbox , and the other items were beginning to be acquired like my new turbo charger instead
of twins and a blower I will be fitting a single one which is capable of supplying the required puff for
the motor.
Ok the build on the motor.
Bottom end scat crank, eagle rods, j+e pistons, x303 cam, crane lifters, manley oil pump, clevite 77 bearings, extrude honed ported roush ally heads with 2.02 inlet valves and 1.9 exhaust valves, bronze guides, double springs, 1.6:1 ally roller rockers, arp studs, scs Titan head gaskets, gt40 lower intake, rpm upper box, 100mm throttle body, 1000cc injectors, Two speed power glide trans, 8.8 inch rear axle, Detroit locker, Stroud chute, GT50/100 turbo charger (left with mobile phone for size comparison) Power glide gearbox, 8 inch 3500rpm stall converter, Custom prop, Ford 8.8 inch rear axle on four link suspension setup.
Easter bank holiday weekend the TINA was at york raceway for the first round of the drag race season she was doing quite well untill disaster struck she burst into flames half way down the drag strip.
along with ian's quick thinking and the fast response of the fire crew thankfully she did not sustaine too much damage although the damage was bad enough as she had boiled the transmission oil on launch break which in turn melted the transmission pipes inside out the fire also damage the wireing the fule lines methenol pipes.
but i pleased to report that they have all been replaced and she is fixed and ready and rearing to go on her next mission to york in may but her first time out will be whitby kustoms on sat 25th april.
